#6 Portland, OR

A tournament close to home! 3hr drive to Beaverton, OR. My son, Ender, came with me to keep me company on the trip. I went to noon class on Saturday, went home, showered, and hit the road. Getting there the night before made it easy to sleep in and not rush to the tournament.

No one in my bracket, and no one in the open class. A simple weigh in, and I collected 2 gold medals. 149.2lbs at weigh in. A little heavier than I expected, but I started my period that morning, so probably retaining some extra water weight.

I had a high school friend, Tay, come to the tournament! He was curious about BJJ, and it was cool watching matches and explaining what was going on and why. We haven't seen each other since high school, so 27 years!

I ran into some familiar faces from the Seattle BJJ scene, which is no surprise since it's so close to Portland.

Looking forward to Austin in a couple weeks where it looks like I'll have an actual match.

Then I'm taking a 6 week break from traveling to prepare for Master Worlds.

Restaurants:

Thai Noodle, etc. Beaverton, OR

Had some pretty great crab fried rice after the tournament.

Frybread Factory, Firecracker Alley, Tacoma, WA

On the drive home I remembered some of the bigger fireworks stands have frybread stands, with Frybread Factory being one of the best.

I stopped by Firecracker Alley picking up the classic cinnamon sugar fry bread, fry taco, and strawberry shortcake frybread. So good.

Places I visited:

Tay recommended Pittock Mansion, so I stopped by before leaving Oregon. The grounds were expansive with a great view of downtown Portland and Mt. Baker. Inside the mansion was a glorious staircase that made it hard to believe this was someone's house. A very cool visit.

Goals

  • Win a bracket

  • Score a takedown

    Upcoming tournaments:
    July 15 Austin, TX
Sept 1 Master Worlds, Las Vegas

    <probably September/October for hysterectomy surgery>
